From Darjeeling, a sleepy trading post in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas to Chennai, a bustling metropolis of over 10 million, to the leafy suburbs of Philadelphia, the birthplace of American freedom - and a family later, it has been one exciting learning experience - from all the people who touched my life to all the events that shaped me.

Brandywine Insights is a product of these experiences, the belief that we need to be aware of what we don’t know and therefore surround ourselves with experts. In a plug-and-play world, why shouldn’t expertise also be on tap?

My work in Business Development and Financial Planning with some of the biggest BFSI firms globally to Corporate Finance with tech startups growing into a global presence cemented the belief that forming a team of experts pays off. This is Brandywine Insights. It is meant to be agile, steady, creative and purposeful.

What's in a Name?

The American Revolutionary War (April 19, 1775 - September 3, 1783) secured the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain. Thursday, September 11, in 1777 saw a bitter battle between General George Washington’s American Continental Army and General William Howe’s British Army. The forces met near Chadds Ford in Pennsylvania across the Brandywine Creek. More troops fought at the Brandywine than any other battle in the American Revolution. The battle of the Brandywine was also the second single-day battle of the war, after the Battle of Monmouth, with over 11 hours of fighting.

Howe moved to take the then American capital, Philadelphia, routed the Continental Army and forced a withdrawal to Chester in Pennsylvania and then to the northeast of Philadelphia. While fighting at Chadds Ford, Howe moved the bulk of his troops on a long march crossing the Brandywine beyond Washington’s right flank. Poor scouting by the Continental Army left the British Army undetected till it reached the rear of the right flank. Washington quickly shifted three divisions to block the British flanking force at Birmingham Meetinghouse and School, a Quaker meeting house. After a long and stiff fight Howe’s wing broke through the Continental Army’s deployed on several hills.

Hessian map of the Philadelphia campaign

As Washington’s army backed away in retreat, a part of General Nathaneal Greene’s division held off Howe’s column long enough for his army to retreat to the northeast. Polish General Casimir Pulaski defended Washington’s rear assisting in the escape. Two weeks later, Philadelphia, the then American capital fell. Nine months later, the city was freed.

The War ended on September 3, 1783 when Britain accepted American independence in the Treaty of Paris.

This and many other battles over 12 years is the history of the American Revolutionary War resulting in the creation of the United States of America. These battle strategies have inspired many a story teller and is the inspiration behind the naming of this consulting practice. Like the countless strategies adopted here and insights learnt, we think our Insights are strategic, consequential and provide a material advantage to firms approaching the many issues they face during the execution of their business plans and goals.

The Brandywine Creek also flows by near my home. It is a world of serenity while agilely navigating the bends and the rocks, the stream babbles away while creating peace for those who experience it. Brandywine Insights is inspired by this ageless creek.
